Η αυτοκρατορία του Μουγκάλ εκτεινόταν στην κεντρική Ασία (σημερινό Αφγανιστάν) και την περιοχή της ινδικής υπο-ηπείρου από τις αρχές του 16ου έως τα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα. Ιδρυτής της ήταν ο Μπαμπούρ, δισέγγονος του Ταμερλάνου (απόγονου, με τη σιερά του, του Τζεγκίς Χαν), όταν κατέλαβε την πόλη της Καμπούλ, τις ανατολικές περιοχές του Χορασάν και την κάτω κοιλάδα του Ινδού ποταμού, για να προχωρήσει στη συνέχεια στο εσωτερικό της ινδικής επικράτειας. Η δυναστεία του Μπαμπούρ ήταν μεν μογγολικής προέλευσης (Μουγκάλ, άλλωστε, είναι η περσική λέξη για τους Μογγόλους), ανάμεικτη, όμως, με τουρκικά, περσικά και ινδικά χαρακτηριστικά. Όπως οι μογγολικές δυναστείας που πήραν τον έλεγχο της Κίνας υιοθέτησαν στοιχεία του κινεζικού πολιτιμού, προεξάρχουσας της βουδιστικής θρησκείας, έτσι και οι Μουγκάλ υιοθέτησαν τον ισλαμική θρησκεία και τον περσικό πολιτισμό. Περσική ήταν και η επίσημη γλώσσα της αυλής. Η αυτοκρατορία των Μουγκάλ καταλύθηκε το 1806.
