Κατά την τριετία 1894 – 1896 υπό τη διακυβέρνηση του Σουλτάνου Αβδούλ Χαμίτ Β’ σφαγιάστηκαν από τον οθωμανικό στρατό δεκάδες χιλιάδες Αρμενίων, ενόπλων και αμάχων. Οι σφαγές στο Σασούν θεωρούνται προάγγελος της Γενοκτονίας των Αρμενίων το 1915 – 1917.
