Πρόκειται για μετάφραση στα γαλλικά του πρωτότυπου αγγλικού τόμου: "A new Geographical Dictionary. Containing a full and accurate account of the several Parts of the known world, As it is divided into continents, islands, oceans, seas, rivers, lakes &c. the Situation, Extent, and Boundaries, of all the Empires, Kingdoms, States, Provinces, &c. in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Their constitutions, revenues, forces, climate, soil, produce, manufactures, trade, commerce, cities, chief towns, universities, curious structures, ruins, antiquities, mountains, mines, animals, vegetables, minerals. Together with the Religion, Learning, Policy, Manners, and Customs, of the Inhabitants. To which is prefixed, an introductory dissertation, explaining the Figure and Motion of the Earth, the Use of the Globes, and Doctrine of the Sphere, in order to render the Science of Geography easy and intelligible to the meanest Capacity. Το αξίωμα του Πασά ήταν από τα σημαντικότερα στην οθωμανική διοικητική και στρατιωτική μηχανή, ανώτερο του Μπέη, αλλά κατώτερο του Μεγάλου Βεζίρη. Η καταγωγή της λέξης προέρχεται από την τουρκομανική “bash aga” που σήμαινε αρχηγός φυλής και την περσική “padeshah” που σήμαινε βασιλιάς και τη χρησιμοποιούσαν οι Σουλτάνοι ως επίσημο τίτλο τους. Ο αριθμός των ιππουρίδων που συνόδευε τον τίτλο κάθε αξιωματούχου ήταν ενδεικτική του μεγέθους του αξιώματός του. Μοναδικός με τέσσερις ιππουρίδες στον τίτλο του ήταν ο Σουλτάνος, ενώ από τρεις είχαν οι κορυφαίοι αξιωματούχοι του.
