Description
Lion-head water spout, described from cast: original now in Budapest Museum of Fine Arts no. 4753; cast given in Aug., 2002. 4 rows of mane locks frame head: locks short, upright, grooved and faceted for individual strands; round-tipped ears set behind first row. Head has deep central furrow, with oblique furrow to either side, creating pronounced knots at bridge of nose. Large oval deep-set eyes with only upper lid rendered. Pronounced cheeks, square muzzle with incised wrinkles on top, deep nostrils, 3 whiskers below. Open mouth with squared teeth. Finished flat in back, hollowed water channel. Somewhat earlier than Nemea spout in style. (Original bought in 1908 from Paul Arndt Collection.)
