Πρόκειται για μετάφραση στα γαλλικά του πρωτότυπου αγγλικού τόμου: "A new Geographical Dictionary. Containing a full and accurate account of the several Parts of the known world, As it is divided into continents, islands, oceans, seas, rivers, lakes &c. the Situation, Extent, and Boundaries, of all the Empires, Kingdoms, States, Provinces, &c. in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Their constitutions, revenues, forces, climate, soil, produce, manufactures, trade, commerce, cities, chief towns, universities, curious structures, ruins, antiquities, mountains, mines, animals, vegetables, minerals. Together with the Religion, Learning, Policy, Manners, and Customs, of the Inhabitants. To which is prefixed, an introductory dissertation, explaining the Figure and Motion of the Earth, the Use of the Globes, and Doctrine of the Sphere, in order to render the Science of Geography easy and intelligible to the meanest Capacity. London: Printed for J. Coote, at the King’s Arms in Pater-noster Row. MDCCLIX." Ο Μεγάλος Βεζίρης ήταν πολιτικά ο ισχυρότερος άνθρωπος στην οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία μετά το Σουλτάνο. Με αρμοδιότητες αντίστοιχες ενός σύγχρονου πρωθυπουργού, ηγούνταν των διοικητικών υπηρεσιών, του στρατού (εκτός των γενιτσαρικών ταγμάτων) και του αυτοκρατορικού συμβουλίου, ενώ έφερε και τη σουλτανική σφραγίδα – απόδειξη του ότι λειτουργούσε ως πληρεξούσιος του Σουλτάνου. Μαζί με τους επικεφαλής των λευκών και μαύρων ευνούχων και τη Bαλιδέ Σουλτάνα ήταν από τα ελάχιστα πρόσωπα με το δικαίωμα να συνομιλούν απευθείας με τον τοποτηρητή του Μωάμεθ επί γης. Οι περισσότεροι Μεγάλοι Βεζίρηδες προέρχονταν από το παιδομάζωμα, στο οποίο επιλέγονταν όχι μόνο δυνάμει ικανοί πολεμιστές, αλλά και διοικητικοί αξιωματούχοι. Η λέξη “βεζίρης” προέρχεται από την περσική vizier.
